Celebrating 21 Years

The Deck is the brain child of Richard Spence (Sr.), who along with his partner, Michael Muirhead, have changed the entertainment landscape in Kingston ever since its humble beginnings in February 1996 as Friends on The Deck at 51 Hope Road (now TGIF). The Deck has earned its place as Kingston’s premier after work social happening and entertainment experience, where friends connect with their peers to unwind, be refreshed and be pampered in a relaxed semi-outdoor atmosphere; with wooden decking, flora, spacious counter, comfy stools, pleasant staff and sumptuous finger foods. Situated in the business district at 14 Trafalgar Road, New Kingston, The Deck is in close proximity to major metropolitan hotels, and serves the business community, as well as local and overseas visitors.

Forget your troubles and dance! Dancing is alive at The Deck, the only place that offers guaranteed dancing every Friday and Saturday Night. Over the years, the cadre of music selectors (Deck Selectors) have grown to include DJ Dwey, Gary Kong, Craig (Young Lion) Ross, Mordan (Mordie) Brown and Clive Buddo (Magic Fingers) and DJ Archie.

On the first Sunday of each month, The Deck is filled with the sweet and soulful sounds of Merritone Music. The Deck opens at 6 pm and believe it or not….NO COVER

The Deck’s ‘Galley’ opens each evening at 5 pm and serves its famous wings, stamp n’ go (salt-fish-fritters), escoveitched fish cuts, jerked chicken, jerked pork and sub sandwiches and other goodies. The ‘Galley’ also boasts the consistently best tasting curried mutton in the corporate area. Don’t believe us? Come and try it. The Deck caters as well!

This newest addition to the Deck’s activities started in December 2016 and is already a hit. Each Wednesday between the hours of 6pm – 10pm for a cost of only JMD $1,000.00, patrons relish in all the Wings, Stamp N’ Go (Saltfish Fritters) and Fries they can eat and enjoy a whopping 20% discount on their drink tab; whilst enjoying musical choices by some of the hottest DJ’s around.

The Deck is a popular location to view the road march each carnival Sunday, the viewing is complemented by an all day Lyme with food, music and refreshments and of course when the revelers leave the road the pace at The Deck picks up a few notches

More and more it is being realized that social interaction amoung staff members outside of the office is a great psychological boost and a necessary management tool. The Deck is the fore runner in this concept and is ideally suited for such interactions. The Deck can host from ten to three hundred guests. We understand your needs and will tailor our offerings to your function’s success; whether the occasion be – welcoming a new staff member, pre task energizers, achievement celebrations, birthday clubs, bon voyage, client meet and greet or just an office get-together. The Deck can provide your own private area, food station, bar and dedicated attendants.

The Deck constantly embraces charitable efforts and has been host to many successful fundraisers over the years. The fundraising package is cost effective and is a turn-key operation for any organizing committee.

The Deck’s success resides in its longevity and the fact that it still remains Kingston’s Premier place of social entertainment. From its humble beginnings in 1996 as Friends on The Deck on Hope Road, The Deck made an effort to stand out in its industry by offering good customer service practices, with friendly staff members in a clean environment as well as offering consistency of product standards, whereby the customer received exactly what he/she came for. Music and varied entertainment themes have also greatly contributed to The Deck’s appeal and dancing has always been part of The Deck’s DNA.

From the early days, both Richard (Sr.) and Michael knew the important role music must play in their business. Within the first year of operating ‘Tuesday Nostalgia’ was formed where each week a DJ would perform and the patrons would guess the name of the tune and the singer in order to win prizes. Back then, Tuesday was the most popular night of the week with music selectors: Errol McGowan (The Rock), Bobby T (Epiphany), Richie Clarke (Tropics), Mordan Brown (Magic Fingers) and Conrad Yee; Andrew Henry (Renegades) was our first and the resident DJ on a Friday, assisted by a young Kurt Riley now Party Animal. Over the years, the cadre of ‘Deck Selectors’ grew to include… Gladdy (Wild Bunch), DJ Dwey, Gary Kong, Craig (Young Lion) Ross, Clive Buddo (Magic Fingers) and DJ Archie.

In September 2003, The Deck, along with band leaders Errol Lee, Dwight Pinkney and

Mickey Hanson embarked on a project to ‘Revive Regular Live Band Music’ in Kingston. Over eighty live performances (Live Thursdays) were occasioned over a two year period  showcasing some of Jamaica’s greatest talents including, Benji Myers,  The Skatalites,  Ernie Smith,  Seretsi Small,  Sabrina Williams,  Pluto Shervington,  Dwight Richards,  Ken Booth, Maria Myrie, Dean Fraser,  Ruddy Thomas,  Boris Gardener, Leroy Sibbles, Bob Andy, and many, many more. Unfortunately, lack of sponsorship caused this very entertaining series of events to be halted.

After 21 years, it is no surprise that Richard Spence (Jr.) has joined Richard Spence (Sr.) as Operations Manager, and has taken up the mantle to maintain our customer focused approach and create an enjoyable entertainment atmosphere for years to come. Richard Spence (Jr.), has over 10 years’ experience in the entertainment industry and is a graduate of UWI with a BSc. Sociology and an MBA Human Resource Management. He has over 6 years’ experience in Facilities and Maintenance Management and is a popular disc jockey with performance experience which includes some of the top events locally, across the Caribbean and North America.
